18 Nov Reading data from the board computer of vehicle (via CAN bus)
The CAN bus is a communication channel between specific electronic modules in vehicles. It was first introduced at 1988 by a serial producer of cars for one of their luxurious models. Gradually, the CAN bus became a mandatory component of the electronic installations for most of the vehicles, as well as for other machines (tractors, excavators and etc.). What is specific about this communications channel is that the encoded messages, which it translates, can be read by a specialized peripheral device, without it interfering or disturbing the data transfer.
By being constructed this way, the CAN bus enables the connection of a device which reads records sent from the board computer. Moreover, the reading device can be integrated in a GPS monitoring device, combining the data from the position of the vehicle with key working parameters read from the board computer.
The GPS monitoring devices of Advanced GPS Technology support safe reading of data from the board computers of all models trucks and of most models cars and buses. This gives access to key parameters, some of which are:

The combination between the positions of the vehicle for past period (traveled routes) and the data, coming from the board computer, provide the opportunity for analysis of series of events, which have happened during the travel of the vehicle or between its stops on the road. The following scenarios can be easily revealed: Check the amount of consumed fuel for an exact day, travel, road or time frame; Check a specific fuel refilling – place, date and hour of the refilling, quantity of the refilled fuel*, mileage reading on the spot and etc; Check a suspicious decrease of the fuel level in the tank – place, date and hour of the decrease, quantity of the missing fuel*, was there a stop during the drop, how long the vehicle was static and etc. Prevention of dangerous or unprofessional driving – single or continuous violation of speed limits, driving at high RPM values, ignoring signals for overheating of the engine, malfunction of the car battery reloading device and etc.
Advanced GPS Technology recommends the upgrade of standard GPS monitoring devices with a module for board computer data reading – when applicable – because of the substantial increase in the precision of the data. This upgrade of the technical configuration is achieved at a minimal cost expansion.
*Notes: The quantity of the refilled or missing fuel is read by the GPS device from the board computer data. Nonetheless, this parameter is translated to the board computer directly from the fuel level sensor, installed in the tank by the producer of the vehicle. There are certain events which can prevent this information from being correct, such as: broken fuel level sensor, fuel level sensor not precise enough, more than 1 fuel tank, damaged connection between the fuel level sensor and the cockpit, fuel level sensor not tared correctly and etc. Alternative solution in these cases would be to install electronic fuel level sensor in the tank of the vehicle, which will be connected directly to the GPS device. This increases the quality of the measuring of the fuel movements from the tank and is part of the services, which Advanced GPS Technology offers.
